May 2008: I am currently re-writing some of the pages on this site. The business pages and some of the blog pages will then be translated into Welsh and be offered bilingually. This should be ready by July 2008.
Webs Wonder is based near Newcastle Emlyn - one of the areas of Wales where the majority of people can speak Welsh. Into the 1960s, well over 90% of the town’s population was Welsh-speaking, but a constant flow of incomers from outside Wales has had a marked effect on the town’s linguistic make-up.
Nevertheless, Welsh remains the language of most of Newcastle Emlyn inhabitants and is spoken by 90% of those who are Welsh-born. According to the UK Census 2001, the population of Newcastle Emlyn was 941 people, of whom 69% speak Welsh fluently.
A documentary in the Analysis series on Radio 4 shows how the learning of Welsh can have a unifying effect on communities. Click to listen
