Wales South at the National Eisteddfod

The annual National Eisteddfod of Wales alternates its venue between North and South Wales. This year it was staged in Llanelli where members of Soroptimist International of Wales South hosted a hospitality tent to welcome visitors from many parts of the world.

Wales South's Vice-President Meg Edwards was responsible for liasing with the host town Llanelli and supervised all the arrangements for the week. SI Llanelli, led by Helen Nicholls, worked extremely hard in setting up the stand to create a welcoming atmosphere. Several Wales South clubs assisted in the hosting for the week.

Many of the visitors were from outside Wales - 'ex-pat' Welsh Soroptimists from English clubs on their Annual Pilgrimage to their home country and others from America, Denmark and Switzerland.

The SI Llanelli team created a big splash of colour in their brilliant blue Soroptimist tee-shirts with the Wales South website printed on the back - they certainly did not go unnoticed when they walked around the Eisteddfod field.

This was a very successful and enjoyable week with a stream of visitors receiving a truly spirited Soroptimist International welcome - the stand was a warm and friendly place to enjoy a cup of tea, welshcakes and bara brith.

Organiser Meg Edwards said afterwards "I must thank SI Llanelli for the enormous amount of hard work they put into this event. My thanks also to members from Aberystwyth, Neath, Fishguard, Port Talbot, Haverfordwest, Bridgend, Pembroke, Barry, Aberdare, Lampeter and Llantrisant who filled in our rota for the week. In 2002 the National Eisteddfod returns to south Wales, to St David's in Pembrokeshire. I hope Soroptimists will be there"
