Wales South Soroptimists spread IGU

Europe

Two Wales South clubs have been getting their feet into Europe this year. SI Abergavenny organised a four-day trip to Belgium at the end of February, visiting Strasbourg and the European Parliament. Some careful forward planning by club President Judy Jenkins resulted in their being escorted around the Parliament building by Euro MP Glenys Kinnock. They were impressed by the enormity of the legislative process in Strasbourg and Brussels. The European Union now comprises 15 countries with a population of around 370 million citizens.

Four members from SI Cardigan had been in Strasbourg during the previous week as part of a town twinning group and also visited the European Parliament. They were delighted to do their bit for IGU during an evening of very generous hospitality offered by SI Strasbourg SIE at the home of Francine Reiser who "loves Wales". Trish Ford remarked "we were so pleased to be extending our friendship across Federation boundaries."

When IPF President Jo Darbyshire chartered SI Tortola in the British Virgin Islands last year she described it as "the most idyllic place on earth with wonderfully friendly people". Fay Cori, SI Cardigan couldn't agree more after a visit there in March. In the few months since chartering SI Tortola have adopted a home for the elderly and recently raised around £1000 for a local children's charity.
